I'll post the answer to this question tomorrow: How many dimes would you need to equal the weight of 4 quarters? It's not a trick question. We're talking about the contemporary fiat metal issued by the United States federal government.

Wouldn't it be swell if the answer were 10?
10. Research, ("weight of quarter" and "weight of dime" in Google).
My guess on "why" is so that vending machines or parking meters can judge when you've put $1 in ... ?
My guess would by ten, because they used to be silver, so presumably they were an actual amount of actual money. The weights, I'm guessing, would remain unchanged, despite them now being copper & zinc or whatever, so existing vending machines could still recognize them. This is just a guess.

The weight of 4 quarters is equal to 22.68 grams or equal to 10 dimes, as dimes are 2.268 grams apiece. Thank you S. W. Carson and Wikipedia.
Also from Wikipedia:
"As with the quarter and half-dollar, 1964 was the last year of traditional .900 fine silver coinage. Beginning in 1965, the dime assumed its current composition, a "sandwich" of copper between two layers of an alloy of 75 percent copper and 25 percent nickel. This composition was selected because it gave similar mass (now 2.27 grams, the ratio to the old size is the same as the ratio of 2 lb to 1 kg, or of a short ton to a metric ton) and electrical properties (important in vending machines), and most importantly, because it contained no precious metal."
I'm guessing you are interested in that last bit.
